Sugar Land to Host Free "E-Waste" Recycling Event

Many of us have old televisions put away in storage, an obsolete desktop computer collecting dust in the garage, and a couple of old cell phones that haven’t placed a call since iPhone became a word.

Do some real spring cleaning and a huge favor for the environment by bringing these items to the City of Sugar Land Free Recycling Event at Mercer Stadium on April 21, from 10 AM to 2 PM.


Ft. Bend Library Exhibit to Feature Works

The exhibit, “In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak,” will be on display at the Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library, from March 8, to April 20.

This showcase will feature famed illustrator Maurice Sendak, whose works include Where the Wild Things Are, and more than 100 other children’s books, as well as providing a look at his life as the son of Jewish immigrants in 1930s New York City. 

The George Memorial Library will be the only library in Texas selected to host this traveling exhibition.


The Sugar Land and Fort Bend communities are among the most safe and pleasant places to live in Texas. Yet as with anywhere, unfortunate events can strike at any time. Are you interested in being among those who volunteer to help your neighbors during an emergency?

The Fort Bend County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), the civilian organization tasked with responding during public health crises, is holding an orientation meeting for potential volunteers on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the First Colony Library in Sugar Land.


New Library Hosts First Book Club Meeting

A new book club for Sugar Land reading lovers is set to hold its first monthly meeting in the area’s beautiful new state-of-the-art library.

The University Branch Library of the Fort Bend County Library debuts its monthly book club on Monday, January 9, at 1:30 pm, and will meet every second Monday of the month henceforth.


City of Sugar Land to Host New Years Eve Bash

Who needs a Times Square ball drop when you can have a Town Square sugar cube drop?
Celebrate New Years Eve this January 31 at Sugar Land Town Square presented by the City of Sugar Land from 7:00 pm to 1:00 am.
All Sugar Land residents and their friends and family are invited to this free one-of-a-kind spectacle.
This New Years party is divided into two separate programs so people of all ages can enjoy themselves.
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm is the Children’s Celebration complete with giant roaming puppets, street performers, nine-foot vines that spring to life, live music, and best of all a fireworks finale.
Beginning at 9:30 pm is the Adults’ Celebration with live bands, dancing, street performers, state of the art lighting effects, and the countdown to 2012 with a 3-D sugar cube drop at midnight.  Alcohol sales for beer, wine and champagne are available for those age 21 and up with valid ID.
This will be a rockin’ party atmosphere so have a memorable New Year’s Eve without even having to leave town.

Bring your family and join the entire community at the 9th Annual Miracle on Morton Street holiday celebration on Saturday, December 3, in Downtown Historic Richmond from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Enjoy a narrated mule-driven wagon tour rides giving tours which highlight the history of Richmond. They will also be dropping off and picking up passengers to the magnificent Moore Home Candlelight Tour, hosted by the Fort Bend Museum.


Sugar Plum Market Comes to Sugar Land

The Fort Bend Junior Service League presents the Sugar Plum Market, presented by Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, November 3 through 5 at the Stafford Center.

The Sugar Plum Market is a shop-till-you-drop extravaganza to prepare for the holiday season. Proceeds go to benefit local Fort Bend and Sugar Land area charities.

LEARN ABOUT KNITTING AT GEORGE MEMORIAL LIBRARY
 

The Needles & Yarn Knitting Circle will meet at Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond Tuesday, October 11, beginning at 10:00 am, in Room 2B of the library.


The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month. Knitters of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced -- are invited to join. Those attending should bring their own knitting needles and yarn. Knitters may also participate in a special group project – making a lap blanket for patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.


Registration is now being accepted for the second season of Fort Bend Gridiron Football, sponsored by the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Methodist Orthopedic Specialists of Texas.

Any student between the ages of 7 and 12 that lives in Fort Bend or Lamar Consolidated School districts can play in the Fort Bend Gridiron Football League.  The league was founded by former Texas A&M and Houston Oiler quarterback Bucky Richardson.  The league teaches proper football fundamentals in a positive environment. The league is affiliated with USA Football, the office youth football organization for the NFL.

Sign up soon! It is estimated that the Fort Bend Gridiron Football League will triple its membership this year.
