Mamie George Community Center Plans Prosper into Future

The ceremonial shovels of new construction were brought out mid October to usher in the construction of the Mamie George Community Center. The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston broke ground for the construction of the Community Center in October, and the Richmond City Commission recently approved the final plat for the project, making the hope a reality.

The ground breaking is the first step in creating a space that will meet identified and yet unmet needs in Fort Bend County. The 24,000 square foot center is designed to serve an average of 400 people a day and is scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2010. The building, set on ten acres of land on Collins and Clay, will house a Wellness Center, a café and Trini’s Corner Market. The 10 acres, valued at $2 million was donated for the project, along with a $2 million challenge grant both from The George Foundation.

The Wellness Center will provide seniors, individuals and families a wide range of activities to enhance their health and fitness, and the Corner Market will provide low-income clients with grocery items that meet their individual preferences and special dietary needs. Bonna Kol, President and CEO of Catholic Charities shared, “Trini’s Corner Market will allow individuals the dignity to receive assistance in a grocery store setting. Most importantly, families will be able to get the food items that are in line with their dietary needs.”

The center will also provide services such as job training, financial planning, support for frail seniors and even pregnancy services.

For more information please contact Michelle Herrera, Capital Campaign Director at 713-874-6763

‘Be A Santa To a Senior’ Program Brings Holiday Joy to Richmond Residents

November 9 began this years’ “Be a Santa to a Senior” campaign which serves to bring holiday joy to seniors who are socially isolated or in financial need. The program, now in its seventh season, is sponsored by the Home Instead Senior Care Center and serves seniors through the Fort Bend County and Katy, TX.

This is not a single effort, but rather a joining of forces by local volunteers, nonprofit organizations, senior agencies, businesses and community groups. Their joint goal is to brighten the lives of seniors during the holiday season by providing them with gifts and companionship.

November 9 through December 4 ornaments will be available at local businesses such as the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Carriage Inn, Sunrise Senior Living and Christus St. Catherine’s Hospital to name a few. Each ornament will have a list of items which shoppers can purchase and return unwrapped, with the ornament fixed to the bag, to the location where they first picked up their ornament. While many individuals take part by purchasing an ornament for a single person, businesses, churches or other organizations can take part by adopting groups of seniors and brightening the lives of many.

Then on December 14, with the assistance of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, local volunteers and the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, deliveries will begin to go out to seniors in the community. If you would like to volunteer or get information on how your group or organization can adopt a group, we encourage you to contact Home Instead Senior Care at 832-379-4700. You will brighten someone’s day this holiday season by giving your time and getting special gifts for a senior in your area, letting them know you care.

Helping Hands Opens Its Doors In Richmond

After over 20 years of working to help others, all from a single home, Rosenberg Richmond Helping Hands, Inc. has finally reached their goal. A new Helping Hands facility has just opened on Collins Road in Richmond.

This non-profit clothing and food bank first announced it would relocate to a larger facility about a year ago, due to increasing demands by clients. What once started as a smaller operation is now growing.

Several groups joined together to make the whole project come to fruition. Richmond's Development Corporation put in $155,000 towards the project, and also swapped land with Lamar CISD for extra parking space. The city of Rosenberg also offered a helping hand, contributing $50,000 at first, and then added an additional $12,500 towards the new facility.

Outside of city contributions, George Foundation gave Helping Hands a $45,000 matching grant to assist them in the completion of the interior of the building, which totaled costs of $90,000. All of these generous contributions led to the completion of the new Helping Hands facility.

On Wednesday, Helping Hands held an open house along with guided tours throughout its new home.

"Isn’t this fabulous?" Nancy Brown, Helping Hands director said regarding their long journey. "We worked hard for this... And here we are."
Inside the new facility is a waiting room, food pantry, interview rooms, and an area for clothing. Everything they need will be under one roof.

"Before, clients had to walk between two buildings to get their food and clothes," Sheryl Williams, Helping Hands volunteer and treasurer said. "Now everything can be done in one place."

Wednesday was a great indication for things to come, as that day exceeded expectations. "We served a record-breaking number of clients," Williams said. On that day, Helping Hands served 48 families, a huge boost from earlier numbers where they would serve 30 and 35 families at the most.

A new window of opportunity has just opened for Helping Hands in Rosenberg Richmond, and its volunteers couldn't be more thankful for it.

"We made it," Brown said. "We made it here on angel's wings."
For more information on Rosenberg Richmond Helping Hands please visit their website at www.roserichhelpinghands.org or call 281-232-4904 during business hours Monday through Friday, 10 am through 2:30 pm.

Image courtesy of the Fort Bend Herald

Source: Fort Bend Herald

Music That's Good for the "Sole"

A local Sugar Land resident has taken it into her own hands to help Fort Bend children get new shoes. Or rather, she’s taken it onto her own feet.

Leola Anifowoshe is the founder of Shoes4School, a division of Keep Kids in School, Inc., a 501 (3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, the only shoe charity of its kind in the Fort Bend area and surrounding counties. She and a group of volunteers strive to provide new shoes for area homeless and low-income children.

In order to spread awareness of the cause, Leola and her husband organized the “Sole Fest Concert 2009,” the organization's first ever music festival and health fair held at Oyster Creek park located at 4033 Hwy 6 in Sugar Land, only about 8 miles from the RiverPark West community.

Events will last from 4-8pm on August 15th, with local artist performances by Carlos Huey, Juda Myers of Judah for Praise, Tquan Moore and the Lazer Vision Band. Songwriter and producer Carlos Huey will be the MC of the event, and will sing an original song he composed specifically for Shoes4School, called “Bless My Sole.” All proceeds from the song will benefit the organization. Fun activities for children will also be available, including moonwalks, an activity zone and giveaways.

Shoes4School is still looking for food and water vendors for the event, as well as ‘Sole Mates’, which are businesses, organizations or individuals “who want to stand and make a difference by helping to collect shoes, supplies and donations,” said Anifowoshe. “Currently the organization receives about 1,000 pairs of shoes a month, but seeks to collect 5,000 shoes per month to meet the needs in the community.”

Shoes4School only accepts donations of new shoes. “People ask us why we only accept new shoes and we tell them that many of these children have always only received used shoes,” she said. “One little girl who received shoes from [us] described it as the first time she owned anything new and said she had always received hand-me-downs from her older sisters.”

The “Sole Fest Concert 2009” will also be providing backpacks and other school supplies. Shoes4School also encourages children to adopt active lifestyles to combat childhood obesity through its Mission for Nutrition Program.

Tax deductible contributions can be made to Keep Kids in School, P.O. Box 2692, Stafford, TX 77497. To learn more about this worthy cause, or to register as a ‘Sole Mate’, please visit www.shoes4school.org. You can also contact info@shoes4schools.org or call 281-947-0466 for more information.

Read the full article at Houston Community Newspapers.

Source: Fort Bend Sun
