Ducks Unlimited Conservation Group Moves into Richmond

Richmond’s historic Lamar-Calder House has a new tenant – Ducks Unlimited, an organization dedicated to conserving wetlands and waterfowl throughout the U.S. and around the world.

What was formerly the home to the Richmond Sheriff’s Office is now home to the world’s leader in wetland and waterfowl conservation, DucksUnlimited. The private, non-profit organization has approximately 45,470 members in the state of Texas and has conserved over 184,566 acres in Texas alone. Their mission is to conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl.

Ducks Unlimited began in 1937 and has been serving Texas since the 1980’s. According to Merendino the group works with a variety of people including private landowners, state parks, wildlife refuges and other public groups and organizations. He also shared that the non-profit organization is funded by grants and donations, with a budget of about $2.5 million for the current fiscal year.

There are two upcoming events benefitting Ducks Unlimited in surrounding areas. On February 6, 2010 the 3rd Annual Puddle for the Ducks Bicycle Ride will take off from Katy Mills Mall at 7:00am. With three different routes of 25, 37 or 45 miles and a metric century (70 mile) route, there will be entertaining rest stops, duck calling and dog demonstrations, with a finish that includes special drawings, beverages, and a light lunch, all serving to make this one of the most fun and exciting rides in Houston this year. On February 19 the neighboring Pearland community will host the Pearland/Friendswood Ducks Unlimited Dinner at 6:00pm at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Pearland, TX. This is a banquet style dinner to benefit Ducks Unlimited.

New Polling Procedures Clarified

Are you a resident of River Park West and have questions about the polling processes? The elections administration office will be holding a meeting to explain and demonstrate the joint primary procedures on January 13 at 2 p.m.

Since Fort Bend County commissioners approved the Joint Primary Election Agreement last month poll stations will now be represented by an integrated team of Republicans and Democrats and the voting booths will be shared by both parties. One team of election workers comprising representatives from both parties will be created for future elections as well.

The public is invited to join the media, election workers and representatives to get a clear first hand understanding of how the new system, unanimously approved, will work. If you would like to attend the demonstration will be in the Gus George Training Academy on Ransom Road in Richmond.

Volunteer Fort Bend Seeks to Recognize Fort Bend County Outstanding Volunteers

With the holiday spirit making its way into hearts around the country many Richmond residents are taking time to celebrate, from spending time with family to reaching out to the community. Volunteer Fort Bend, an organization that matches volunteers and agencies, is seeking to honor the “most outstanding volunteers” of Fort Bend County. They are looking for those individuals that have made a significant difference and impact in their community by volunteering for an organization or a group of individuals.

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for nominations for exemplary volunteer work in the following areas: working with youth, civic volunteer work, volunteer work for health or education, social service volunteer work, community development, volunteering with/for groups, and work in the cultural and performing arts.

All nominations received will be reviewed by a panel of judges and the top five outstanding volunteers in the community will be honored along with their accomplishments with a celebratory breakfast on Thursday April 29 and by Fort Bend County Judge, Robert Hebert, at the ‘2010 County Judge’s Volunteer Fort Bend Awards.’

All volunteer work must be done in Fort Bend County, without any monetary compensation, and cannot be confined to a specific religious denomination or be part of partisan political work.

Houston High School Spotlight

For the next 10 weeks, Comcast digital cable provider will be airing local Houston high school football games every Thursday night at 7 pm. Now local fans and proud families can watch their favorite teams in the comfort of their homes.

The premiere game was last night with Richmond's Travis Tigers vs. Katy's Morton Ranch Mavericks. Produced by Texas Mobile Broadcasting, the games will be available to digital cable customers on Channel 29 through Nov. 5th. Schools included in the program are in the Houston, Katy and Clear Creek independent school districts.

LCISD Wins Top Honor in Texas

After defeating over two dozen other school districts, the Lamar Consolidated School District was selected as the Best Large School District of Texas and received a grand prize of $100,000 as the winner of the H-E-B Excellence Award, the state’s largest monetary recognition program for educators.

The Richmond community of River Park West is located in the LCISD and hosts some the award-winning schools within the district. The new Hutchinson Elementary School has achieved Exemplary Ratings from 2005-2007, and half of the local high school graduates are recommended or distinguished program participants, making them “Texas School Grant Eligible.” As proof of LCISD’s commitment to the establishment of premier education, over 75% of graduates are college-bound, compared to the national average of only 25%.

The H-E-B Excellence Award program began its campaign to find such honorable schools in 2002, awarding over $3 million to 773 educators and 155 schools and districts across the state. The program specifically recognizes “the best in Texas education,” from school districts as a whole to individual teachers, as well as cash prizes for educator’s achievements.
