Yee Haw! Time to grab those cowboy boots and do a world of good for a great cause.
The 1st Annual Boot Scoot’n Across Texas for Hydrocephalus Awareness WALK is Saturday, September 24, at Oyster Creek Park in Sugar Land.
Wear your cowboy boots, hiking boots, rubber boots, or even winter boots and join hundreds of fellow participants. Registration begins at 8:30 am, with opening ceremonies following at 9:15 am. The walk begins at 10:00 am. There will be games and events for the whole family until 2:00 pm.
This is open to anyone and free to participate in, though donations to help fight hydrocephalus are gladly accepted. Money will go towards a statewide goal of raising at least $100,000 for research and education.
Hydrocephalus, also commonly known as "water on the brain," is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This may cause increased intra-cranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, tunnel vision, and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can also cause death. Brain surgery is the only way to treat a shunt. In most cases the affected will have to undergo numerous brain surgeries during their lifetime to decrease risks of serious symptoms or death.
There is no known cure for hydrocephalus and the current method of treatment, developed in the 1950s is considered out of date. Research money is critical to develop more modern breakthroughs in treating the disease.
The WALK support team is currently looking for volunteers and organizers to assist in planning the event and helping the day of the Boot Scoot.
