Helping Hands Opens Its Doors In Richmond

After over 20 years of working to help others, all from a single home, Rosenberg Richmond Helping Hands, Inc. has finally reached their goal. A new Helping Hands facility has just opened on Collins Road in Richmond.

This non-profit clothing and food bank first announced it would relocate to a larger facility about a year ago, due to increasing demands by clients. What once started as a smaller operation is now growing.

Several groups joined together to make the whole project come to fruition. Richmond's Development Corporation put in $155,000 towards the project, and also swapped land with Lamar CISD for extra parking space. The city of Rosenberg also offered a helping hand, contributing $50,000 at first, and then added an additional $12,500 towards the new facility.

Outside of city contributions, George Foundation gave Helping Hands a $45,000 matching grant to assist them in the completion of the interior of the building, which totaled costs of $90,000. All of these generous contributions led to the completion of the new Helping Hands facility.

On Wednesday, Helping Hands held an open house along with guided tours throughout its new home.

"Isn’t this fabulous?" Nancy Brown, Helping Hands director said regarding their long journey. "We worked hard for this... And here we are."
Inside the new facility is a waiting room, food pantry, interview rooms, and an area for clothing. Everything they need will be under one roof.

"Before, clients had to walk between two buildings to get their food and clothes," Sheryl Williams, Helping Hands volunteer and treasurer said. "Now everything can be done in one place."

Wednesday was a great indication for things to come, as that day exceeded expectations. "We served a record-breaking number of clients," Williams said. On that day, Helping Hands served 48 families, a huge boost from earlier numbers where they would serve 30 and 35 families at the most.

A new window of opportunity has just opened for Helping Hands in Rosenberg Richmond, and its volunteers couldn't be more thankful for it.

"We made it," Brown said. "We made it here on angel's wings."
