LCISD's Lamar Consolidated High School student Leslie Montes, along with Foster High School students Dorothy Bateman and Florencia Ghinaglia, are proud Finalists in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

This is an impressive accomplishment for Lamar Consolidated I.S.D., as only 15,000 high school students in the nation achieve this rank and less than one percent of high school seniors in the nation are names as Finalists.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is dedicated to three goals: - to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students; - to stimulate increased support for their education; and - to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships.

Fort Bend Named Best Place to Get Ahead

Not only has Fort Bend County, Texas been named one of 10 places for professionals get ahead in business, but it “topped” the list developed by the trusted online financial magazine, Forbes.com.

Forbes narrowed down their list to only include counties “where the median household income was $75,000 per year or higher, to focus on places where you can earn a solid salary and move up quickly, rather than ones that went from low to average incomes.”

The success of this Houston suburb is solidly based on a 10% growth in income between 2007 and 2008 with an added 5% spike in employment since 2007, bringing up the numbers to 5,913 new jobs. The reason why this success was possible is due to the overall diversity of Texas’ industry sectors, including energy, education and hospitality, which in turn have fueled rapid population growth over the past several decades. Many of Forbes’ 400 Best Big Companies also make their home in Texas, particularly Baker Hughes, Texas Instruments and Thermo Fisher.

Since 1998 Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been serving the Richmond community and River Park West residents. They are committed to compassionate and quality care, and are dedicated to fighting and preventing cardiovascular diseases, which affect 80 million (1 in 3) American adults. Recently the hospital was recognized for their outstanding work and commitment to educating the community on cardiovascular diseases through advertising.

In order to reach the community the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital created a TV advertising program with information about cardiovascular disease, as well as what services are available to help treat both cardiac and vascular diseases. For this exemplary advertising work the hospital received a Gold Award by the CardioVascular Advertising Awards (CVAA) - the nation’s premier advertising awards program.

The CVAA was impressed with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s program. “It was a privilege to have Methodist Sugar Land Hospital participate in this prestigious awards program,” shared Randy Lucas, CVAA Program Director. “Methodist Sugar Land Hospital exceeded all expectations for quality and excellence in Cardiovascular Communications.” The CVAA recognizes outstanding quality for healthcare marketing in the cardiac and vascular sectors exclusively, so they know what to look for in quality.

New Polling Procedures Clarified

Are you a resident of River Park West and have questions about the polling processes? The elections administration office will be holding a meeting to explain and demonstrate the joint primary procedures on January 13 at 2 p.m.

Since Fort Bend County commissioners approved the Joint Primary Election Agreement last month poll stations will now be represented by an integrated team of Republicans and Democrats and the voting booths will be shared by both parties. The public is invited to join the media, election workers and representatives to get a clear first hand understanding of how the new system, unanimously approved, will work. If you would like to attend the demonstration will be in the Gus George Training Academy on Ransom Road in Richmond.

Lamar CISD Mustang Band Goes to Alamo Bowl

The 17th Annual Valero Alamo Bowl was more than a year for a Texas tradition, and for many people in Richmond January 2nd was more than a competition between Texas Tech and Michigan State. This year it was a once in a lifetime chance for 160 kids from Texas. The Lamar Consolidated High School Mustang Band was chosen to perform at the Alamo Bowl halftime show, but their performance on the field didn’t stop there.

Upon arrival on Thursday December 31 the band competed in the Alamo Bowl Marching Contest which determined the top notch band who would take center stage in the pregame march, performing prior to the Texas Tech and Michigan State bands. “The Mustang band – the only band from Texas to compete – placed first in every category in the large band division,” said Jason Levin, LCHS band director.

The Mustangs swept the field, receiving first place awards for Outstanding Marching, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Drum Majors, Outstanding Colorguard, and Outstanding General Effect. The band not only made the play in the large band division, it was also named Overall Outstanding Band, meaning it had the highest score of all the bands regardless of size.
