Sugar Land to get Minor League Baseball Team

No hay traducciones disponibles.

As a result of months of negotiations, a deal has finally been inked for Sugar Land to get an Atlantic-league Minor League Baseball expansion team. The deal not only provides for a multi-use, year-round, $30million facility for the community, but also provides an estimated $7.7million in yearly income to the Sugar Land community over a lease currently confirmed for twenty years.

Area voters approved the start and initial funding of this effort in November, 2009, and the team is expected to take the field in late spring 2012.  A “name the team” contest is planned during the intervening time.  This is a great affirmation of the growth and success of the city of Sugar Land. Area politicians and the team management company are very excited to move forward towards the 2012 completion and know that the anticipation of area baseball fans will soon be channeled into opening season!

Fort Bend Named Best Place to Get Ahead

Not only has Fort Bend County, Texas been named one of 10 places for professionals get ahead in business, but it “topped” the list developed by the trusted online financial magazine, Forbes.com.

Forbes narrowed down their list to only include counties “where the median household income was $75,000 per year or higher, to focus on places where you can earn a solid salary and move up quickly, rather than ones that went from low to average incomes.”

The success of this Houston suburb is solidly based on a 10% growth in income between 2007 and 2008 with an added 5% spike in employment since 2007, bringing up the numbers to 5,913 new jobs. The reason why this success was possible is due to the overall diversity of Texas’ industry sectors, including energy, education and hospitality, which in turn have fueled rapid population growth over the past several decades. Many of Forbes’ 400 Best Big Companies also make their home in Texas, particularly Baker Hughes, Texas Instruments and Thermo Fisher.

A Golden Anniversary dawns the New Year as Sugar Land celebrates its 50th Year as a city. Richmond and area residents are invited to join in the celebration at a New Year’s Eve party to remember Sugar Lands roots, first planted on December 29, 1959. Just as Texas has continued to grow, Sugar Land and neighboring towns and communities have also continued to flourish.

The New Year’s Eve party will be held in Sugar Land Town Square on December 31st from 5pm to 1am. The evening’s festivities will be divided into three celebrations. The first will be the Children’s Celebration from 5-7:30pm with street performances, and entertainment on the main stage as well as walk around entertainment like the roaming stilt dinosaurs and a candy sculptor.

The second celebration will bring enjoyment for all ages – the 50th Anniversary Celebration from 7:30-8pm – will be a time for all to celebrate by singing “Happy Birthday” to Sugar Land after which a giant birthday cake will be cut and shared by all. This will follow the unveiling of a commemorative art piece, to be installed in the main foyer of city hall, commissioned by sculptor Joe Kenney to be “a salute to our historic Texas and Imperial Sugar roots.”

All nominations received will be reviewed by a panel of judges and the top five outstanding volunteers in the community will be honored along with their accomplishments with a celebratory breakfast on Thursday April 29 and by Fort Bend County Judge, Robert Hebert, at the ‘2010 County Judge’s Volunteer Fort Bend Awards.’

‘Be A Santa To a Senior’ Program Brings Holiday Joy to Richmond Residents

November 9 began this years’ “Be a Santa to a Senior” campaign which serves to bring holiday joy to seniors who are socially isolated or in financial need. The program, now in its seventh season, is sponsored by the Home Instead Senior Care Center and serves seniors through the Fort Bend County and Katy, TX.

This is not a single effort, but rather a joining of forces by local volunteers, nonprofit organizations, senior agencies, businesses and community groups. Their joint goal is to brighten the lives of seniors during the holiday season by providing them with gifts and companionship.

November 9 through December 4 ornaments will be available at local businesses such as the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Carriage Inn, Sunrise Senior Living and Christus St. Catherine’s Hospital to name a few. Each ornament will have a list of items which shoppers can purchase and return unwrapped, with the ornament fixed to the bag, to the location where they first picked up their ornament. While many individuals take part by purchasing an ornament for a single person, businesses, churches or other organizations can take part by adopting groups of seniors and brightening the lives of many.
